Miss Sassy Contest!

Do you love scrappin? Do you love contests? Do you have a secret (or not-so-secret) dream of being a Beauty Queen?? Then come on over to Sassy Scrappers where we are having our second annual Miss Sassy Contest!

This contest will run for six weeks, with the first challenge (or round) being posted on Friday, October 16th. But of course, you have to let us know that you want to be a contestant...don't worry it's easy! All you have to do is go to the Contests forum at Sassy Scrappers, find the thread titled "Opening Number" and share with us your all-time favorite layout!! That's it, once you have done that you are officially in the running to be crowned Miss Sassy! Sign ups will be open until Thursday, October 15th at midnight PST.

Challenges will be posted on Fridays (starting Oct 16th) and will be due on Thursdays. After the Opening Number there will be six rounds of challenges and eliminations.

The winner at the end of the contest will be crowned Miss Sassy and will receive a prize! We will also crown a Miss Congeniality and send her a prize too! And that's not all...anyone who just wants to play along, as well as anyone who is eliminated and wants to continue playing along will be eligible for a chance at another prize!

So, do you think you have what it takes to be crowned Miss Sassy??

Crop Chat!

Alright, here is where we can do all our non-challenge related chatting! Just post in the comments!

Steph's Gift Tag Challenge

Let's use up every bit of those scraps! When you have finished your cards this weekend, don't throw your scraps away...I want to see you make a coordinating gift tag! Any shape or size! Make one to go with every card and get your name in the hat each time for a RAK at the end of the crop!

Steph's Birthday Card Challenge

I want to see you create a birthday card with the following items...

* A cupcake, cake, or other birthday "treat"
* Glitter, beads, etc. (for the sprinkles on those treats)
* 2 or more ribbons, fibers or trims (for the pretty bows on the presents)
* A sentiment

Can't wait to see your cards!

Jodi's Treat Bag Challenge

Treat bag challenge!

With Halloween coming up... it is the perfect time to get those treat bags ready for your kiddies! Here is my sample (and my first reveal from the cutting cafe!)

Karen's Trifold Card Challenge

My card challenge is to make a tri-fold card. The theme can be anything but there is a twist-you must use something that sparkles like Stickles, glitter or some other type of bling.

Link to making a tri-fold card-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-RnUhjxRVo

Here is my example-

Inside

Scrappyshel's PINK Card Challenge

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, I have a very simple challenge.... use any shade of PINK on a card... AND add at least one ribbon to your card.

And after you are done... go do your self exam, get your mammogram scheduled (if you are over 40), and remind someone you love to do so too!

Janet's December Holiday Card Challenge

I challenge you to create a Holiday card...Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza....whatever December holiday you wish. I, too, am being somewhat selfish with this challenge. I make my Christmas cards every year and want to get started early. And...no other requirements...it just needs a holiday greeting. I'm for easy this month! HEHEHE! Anyway...happy holiday card making!

Valerie's Masculine Card Challenge

My challenge is a little bit self-centered Suspect, because I need help making masculine cards. I love using the color pink and flowers and lace and all kind of feminine things on cards, but when it comes to creating a birthday card for the men in my life, I always draw a blank.

SO, my challenge for you is to make a masculine card. Show me how it's done! Oh, and while you're at it, do a little distressing one the card (ink, sanding, etc.). I think distressing sounds like a masculine thing to do. Have fun. I can't wait to get some ideas from all of you.

Jill's "Spooky" Card Sketch Challenge

Here is my challenge...also using a card sketch from September pagemaps

I loved the little monsters this month that Jodi used in her DT reveal, so my challenge is to use the above card sketch and make a card with monsters or spooks on it.

Deanna's Card Sketch Challenge

I chose this sketch from Shanna's Sketch Blog here. Hope it inspires you in some way!

You must also include a deco edge like in the sketch in some way.

Here's my example! Turned the sketch on it's side! My deco edge is made using a Border Punch.
Thank You Card -

World Card Making Day BLOG Crop!

Technical difficulties will NOT stop the festivities here at Sassy Scrappers! We're going to roll with the punches and move our crop over here to our blog...it could use the activity anyways, lol!!

All the same info applies...although I know it will be hard to get your 10 chat posts...but one creation must be for a crop challenge ONLY, all other creations can be combined with other challenges on the board.

All challenges are due on TUESDAY, October 6th at midnight PST...an extra day.

I will post each challenge in a new post, upload your creations to the gallery (it still works...will link on the side), and post them in the comments under that appropriate challenge. We will have a post for chatting too. All of the posts that you will need will be linked on the sidebar, near the top.

Have fun!!

October

Fall has arrived! My mom actually had snow on her way home the other night, I am so NOT ready for that just yet!! But I do LOVE the cooler weather and the beautiful colors!

Just as the snow will soon arrive, so will Christmas! I know, I know, but really, every year I swear I am going to start getting ready earlier, and still every year it creeps up on me just as quickly, and once again I am not as ready as I would like to be when the big day arrives. Well, in the spirit of getting ready for Christmas early, this Saturday is World Card Making Day, a day to celebrate the art of card making, AND to kick off the holiday card making season! So, this weekend, starting tomorrow morning, we will be celebrating on the Sassy Scrappers message board with a little crop full of challenges to help you get your card stash plumped up!! Challenges will all be posted first thing Friday morning and will be due at midnight on Monday, October 5th! We hope to see you there!!

Our DT will be revealing some of their fabulous card creations with their challenges this weekend, using the wonderful cutting templates and digital stamps that we received from our awesome sponsor: The Cutting Cafe! A HUGE thank you going out to Regina for not only the products for the DT to work with, but she has also sponsored our monthly contest, donating THREE sets of images for the winner of the contest, so be sure to stop on by and check that out...it's an easy peasy one, I hope to see a TON of entries this month!!

This month's Guest Designer is Karen, aka Xhater. We are so pleased to have her on the team for this month and can't wait to see what she creates! If you want to learn more about Karen, pop on over to the message board and see what she had to say when I asked her to share a bit about herself with us!

Have a fabulous month!!

September has arrived!

A new month, a new school year, and the start of another beautiful autumn. I love autumn :) Now that things are starting to get back to a normal pace, normal activities, etc. it's time to get things rolling again...with the help of my new day planner, lol! We have lots of fun things going on at Sassy this month, here's a peek...

September Sponsor: our fabulous sponsor this month is My Favorite Things, a wonderful clear stamp company! Huge thanks to Kim! The DT have been busy working with some super fun stamps that Kim sent us, so be on the lookout before the weekend is over for some sneak peeks of their projects!

September Guest Designer: BrendaB! I have always been inspired by Brenda's use of stamps on her projects so there was no other choice for Guest Designer this month! Stop by the forum to learn a bit more about Brenda!

September Contest: Stamp It! Let's see you use those stamps this month! You must use at least one IMAGE stamp on a project...cards, layouts, altered projects, anything you want, as long as you stamp an IMAGE somewhere on there! Letters, sentiments, etc. do NOT count, though you are still welcome to use them along with your image :)

September Crop: School's In! Monday will kick off our School's In Crop for September. We will be having classes during the week, Mon-Thurs, then on Friday school's out for the weekend and it's time to do your homework! But don't worry, this is some of the most fun homework you'll ever be given!!

That's just a peek at the fun happening this month at Sassy Scrappers! Be sure to stop by and say hi, we'd love to chat with you!!

Have a great long weekend, see you on the boards!!

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

July DT Sponsor: Bound + d/termined!!

I would like to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to Janis of Bound + d/termined for sponsoring our design team this month with some absolutely AWESOME products!! Be sure to head on over and check out their awesome albums...can I just say that the School Years pocket folder album is pure genius! Also check out all the papers and die cut embellishments. And they even have kits complete with album, papers and stickers!

And now I must share with you the BEST deal ever...the Word To The Wise Value Pack!

This is what each of the DT gals received to work with this month and I am sure they will echo me in saying WOW, WOW, WOW!!! It contains 124 sheets of great quality paper, with some really awesome quotes and sayings printed on some of them, plus some great patterns that you really can use for any theme or occasion, it is such a versatile pack! PLUS, there are 9 sheets of die-cut embellishments from frames, to tags, to strips, to buckles and much more! If you were to pick up one of these value packs and toss in one of their awesome albums, and some refills, you would truly be set for a looooooong time!!

I can't for you all to see this kit in action, the DT gals have already done some awesome work with it...keep an eye on the blog where I will post some "sneak peeks" plus some of the gals will be posting peeks on their own blogs as well!

I also wanted to mention that this month Bound + d/termined is participating in the "FireCracker Festival" Shop Hop! These shop hops are so fun, so while you are over checking out all of the fabulous products Bound + d/termined has to offer, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the hidden image, and play along!!

Crop & Chat Info for Friday, January 23rd

Last weekend we had some awesome cards come out of Jill's Crop & Chat! Everyone seemed to enjoy getting away from the layouts for a few days, I know I did!!

Well, this weekend we are going to be leaving the layouts aside again and will be embarking on an altering adventure with Maureen!! She has mentioned that you will need a canvas to work with, any size/shape. You can find them at just about any craft/hobby store...even WalMart carries them! So get your canvasses ready and join us Friday afternoon for a weekend of altering fun!!

PS. I know I forgot a LOTW last Sunday, no excuses, I just plum forgot! But, we will be having a very special LOTW presentation this coming Sunday in honor of one of our members that we lost this week! Please be sure to stop by and check it out!

So, if any of that has caught your attention, be sure to join Jill in the Crop & Chats forum on Friday evening...between 7 & 8pm EST (4 & 5pm PST)!

This Week at Sassy Scrappers

I want to thank everyone for making this weekend's crop such a great one! It was a fun one and everyone seemed to get a lot done! I'll be drawing the winners later today, so if you entered any of the challenges be sure to keep your eye on the crop area to see if you won a RAK or if you were the lucky Grand Prize winner!!

Due to some postal delays, as well as some delays on my part, the Design Team just received their kits over the weekend and they are working hard to have their reveals ready for later this week! Check out the board or gallery after teh 15th to see what they have created with their kits from My Sweet Spuds!

And as always, there is the Crop & Chat this Friday! Jill will be our hostess this week! Check back tomorrow for all the details!!

Hope you have a fabulously scrappy week!

LOTW January 11th

This weekend's crop has been so fun! We've had some awesome layouts coming in, I just can't believe how busy everyone has been!! I thought it would be fun to showcase a layout from the crop for this week's Layout Of The Week, and this is one that I found in the gallery and totally missed in the crop threads!
This is a layout that BrendaB did for Deanna's sketch challenge. I love the lacy stuff behind the photos and the cluster of felt embellies! And the colors are wonderful too! Be sure to stop by the gallery and leave Brenda some love!

Break from Bloggin'

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to make a little announcement that we will be taking a bloggin break until after the holidays! Things have just been so hectic that I haven't been able to keep it up. This last week has been so crazy I have barely even made it to the message board!! So, I thought rather than just not be posting anything, I will make it an official break! LOL!

We at Sassy Scrappers hope that you all have a wonderful holiday and we will see you back here in the new year!!

Punchinella!

Ok, so I had NO idea that is what it is called, but this month's sponsor...ScrapMuse...sent us some fabulous kits, and in the one I got to play with there was some of this fun and funky stuff in there! I had no idea what I would do with it at first, but when I get something like this in a kit I challenge myself to be sure and use it somehow, someway, on at least one project! So...in case you have no idea what to do with it either, I thought I would share the two uses I came up with as our "class" this week! If you have any other uses, feel free to post them in the comments, we would love to hear your ideas!!

Use #1: Stenciling
For my first Punchinella project, I used the paint that also came in my kit and some tissue paper to stencil some dots onto my layout.
* Just squirt some paint onto a plate (or anything you don't mind having paint on).
* Scrumple up some tissue and dip it in.
* Dab the tissue on a scrap piece of paper to get any excess paint off.
* Place the Punchinella over the area that you want to stencil.
* Dab the painted tissue over the top of the Punchinella. You can do this uniformly to get every whole in a perfect pattern, or like I did and just dab all over to get bits and pieces of the pattern.

Here is my finished project:

Use #2: Cutouts
For my second Punchinella project, I cut some shapes out of it for some fun layering.
* Decide on a shape that you want to cut out.
* Place the shape on top of your Punchinella.
* Tace around with a SlickWriter or Sharpie...anything permanent, that won't rub off, since it is a plasticky surface.
* Cut out on the inside of your traced lines (especially if you are using an irridescent, the lines will show through if you don't cut on the inside of them)
* Cut out another shape that you want to layer with from patterned paper or cardstock.
* Adhere together on your layout.

I did some snowflakes to create this layout...

Chipboard Ornaments Class

Sorry I am late this week, it's been crazy here with illnesses, craft sales, and getting ready for the holidays! But, I have my camera working again (Thanks Carrie!!!) and I do have a class prepared for you to make some pretty, easy peasy, ornaments for your holiday tree!
Chipboard Ornaments:

Materials needed:
chipboard shape (or sheet of chipboard to cut your own)
paint
glitter
paper (scraps are great!)
other embellishments
hole punch
ribbon

Prepare the chipboard shape:
* If you are cutting your own, this would be where you cut it out ;)

**This is for shapes that have sticky backs (such a Basic Grey shapes, which is what I used here)...
Step 1: Remove the paper backing

Step 2: Remove the sticky layer. I use my finger nail to lift it up a little in one spot around the edge, then onceit is lifted enough that you can get a hold of it, just peel it off. This can get tricky with more intricate shapes, but be patient!

Step 3: *optional* Use some sandpaper to smooth any rough parts off if the sticky layer did not come off smoothly.

Step 4: Punch a hole somewhere on your shape where you will thread the ribbon through for hanging. It is important to do this before you start creating your ornament!

Creating the ornament:

Step 1: Paint! This may take a couple of coats to get it looking right, depending on how much soaks into the chipboard. Make sure to get around the edges and in the hole that you punched in the previous step!

Step 2: Add some paper, glitter and embellishements! Both sides!

Step 3: Thread a piece of ribbon through the hole and hang it somewhere where everyone will see it!!

Gift Box #2

Since I am still cameraless, today I am going to send you over to Mirkwood Designs for some great gift box templates! They are super easy to use...

* you can print them directly onto the back of your paper of choice, or you can print them ont plain paper, trace onto your paper of choice and cut them out.

* to score the fold lines I like to use either the scoring "blade" in my trimmer for straight folds OR for a curver fold (ie: pillow boxes) I use my embossing stylus and emboss along the fold line, works just the same as scoring!

* don't foget to embellish when you're done!!

Maze Book Class

What a crazy weekend we had here at my house! Between Halloween activities, Austin's dad throwing himself into all kinds of AA activities, and the beautiful, gorgeous, extraordinary fall weather we have been having here lately, I barely saw the inside of my apartment for more than five minutes and a change of clothes all weekend! And this is why the class is late this week...Maureen was awesome and had it to me on Wednesday and I just couldn't seem to find the time to get it posted here! But, here I am and here it is...

This week's class is brought to us by Maureen aka DolphinDesigns! She has created this adorable Maze Book to share with us! I hope you'll all give it a try!!

Materials you will need~
Bone folder
Cutting mat
Craft knife
Ruler
Adhesive
2~ 3 1/4" X 3 1/4" Chipboard squares
2~ 4 1/4" X 4 1/4" Pattern paper for front and back covers
1~ 12 X 12 Cardstock for the inside pages
1/4" ribbon about 1 yard

Inside of Album
Step 1~
Take your cardstock fold it in half. (use bone folder to reinforce the fold)
Step 2~
You will take one side, fold it back to the center (use bone folder to reinforce the fold) Step 3~
Take the other side , fold it back to the center (use bone folder to reinforce the fold) Will look like a "W" Step 4~
Take the "W", repeat steps 1-3 the other way. Should make 16 squares that measure 3" X 3"
Step 5~
Open the card stock, place it on a cutting mat. Starting at the top cut down 3 squares (make sure not to cut the last square). Take the next line (center), cut that line. Make sure you cut from the other direction. Last cut will be on the left side. You will want to make sure that cut is going the same as the first cut you made. Will look like an "M"
Step 6~
Fold the first leg up, then turn to fold the middle, and last leg. You have now folded the maze. Set this aside

Album Covers
Covers Step 1~
Take your 4 1/4" X 4 1/4" pattern paper and turn it upside down. Put your adhesive on the chipboard squares. Attach them to the pattern paper. (repeat a second time) Cover Step 2~
Trim all but 1/8" from the corners of the pattern paper. Cover Step 3~
Place adhesive on the back of the pattern paper. Fold that over, use bone folder to reinforce the fold (repeat this 3 more times) Cover Step 4~
Take the two finished covers and place them side by side about 1/2" apart. Cover Step 5~
Now you will place adhesive in the middle of both the back covers. Place the ribbon over the adhesive. Leaving extra ribbon on both sides to tie the finished book.

Assembling the Album
Assembly Step 1~
Add adhesive to the one side of the maze (cardstock). Place it on one side of the chipboard top. Making sure it opens the correct ya. (repeat this step for the second side)

Watercolor Class

This week's class is a little tutorial on using watercolor crayons! I got mine in a Stampin' Up! Simply Sent card kit, and I used them to make the cards and that was it, they sat on my shelf for a year untouched! Then I was at The Paper Crate the other day and Robyn was using her inks to do some watercoloring and I thought hey! So I came home, dug them out, and got to work! And now I am going to share with you how easy it is!

You will need...
Watercolor pen (has a reservoir to fill with water and a paintbrush-like tip)
Watercolor crayons OR ink pads
Paper

Instructions (for using crayons)
1. Take your crayon and scribble on something that you can wipe off later. I used the lid of a plastic container, and just went round and round in a small area until I had a good amount of the crayon accumulated on the lid.

Step 2: Take your watercolor pen and squeeze until water starts to come out of the tip. Brush it around on the colored spot mixing the water with the crayon, until it is all a watery puddle.

Step 3: Now paint on your paper, and repeat! It's that easy!!

Here is my finished layout...

**If you don't have watercolor crayons, you can us ink! Just take the ink pad that you want to use and scrape the pad across the edge of it's lid. A small amount of ink will pool there. Now take your watercolor pen and do the same as with the crayon spot.

**If you don't have a watercolor pen, you may be able to use a Q-tip with some water to get the watery-ness, and then just use a regular paint brush to paint...I have not tried this myself, but I am sure it will work just the same!

Altered Notebook Class

This week's class is brought to us by our fabulous DT gal, Valerie! She has issued an altered notebook/journal challenge over at the Passionately Pink Crop and has prepared this tutorial to go along with it...so here it is...

For this challenge, we're going to alter a notebook to be used as a journal. A journal can be a very useful tool, for various reasons:
- Writing down your thoughts and feelings in a journal is a proven method of relieving stress. It helps us to focus and clarify what we are feeling and experiencing. We can better understand exactly what we are going through, and realize what actions we can take to work through the stress.
- Journaling on a regulas basis can help us record our daily joys and stresses.
- A journal can be used to record everyday happenings that can later be used on your scrapbook layouts.
- Journaling can also be used as a motivational tool for something we want to keep doing, stop doing, do less of, or do more of. You can use a journal for that topic alone.
- An altered notebook can be used as a "Travel Journal" as well. Writing in it every day will provide you with a lot of information that you would have forgotten by the time you get around to scrapping those photos.
- Or create a journal as a gift for someone! They will think of you every time they use it.

All you need to begin is a notebook of some sort. It can be something you already have around the house, or pick up an inexpensive notebook when you're out shopping this week. I prefer a notebook with lines, because I find it easier to write in. You will also need some type of adhesive. I like to use Mod Podge because it can be used as an adhesive, and also a sealant. It is available at any craft store. Of course, you can use any adhesive that you like.

CREATING AN ALTERED NOTEBOOK
Here are some photos and simple instructions for creating your own altered notebook/journal. You can transform any notebook into something that reflects your personal style, using the scrapbook supplies that you already have.

First, you will need a notebook of any size to alter. Here’s a photo of some notebooks that I have to alter.
This is the notebook that I’m going to use:
In addition to a notebook, you will also need:
- a strong adhesive such as Mod Podge, decoupage glue, or spray adhesive
- foam brush
- scrapbooking papers, embellishments, ribbons
- scissors or paper trimmer
- sandblock, sandpaper, or emery board
- brayer (optional)
Begin by choosing the paper that you want to use on your cover and the back of your journal. Don't forget to cover the back so your notebook will look good on both sides. Measure your cover and cut the paper to the approximate size of the journal.

As you plan your cover (and the back), think of it as a scrapbook page. You will begin with a base, and build from there. I'd suggest using patterned paper instead of cardstock, and make it as plain or embellished as you like.

Now that you have the paper for your covers, you can adhere it to the notebook. I use Mod Podge because I think it's easy to work with, and that's what I will refer to here. Using a foam brush, apply a generous amount to the cover of the book. If your notebook has a binding, don't worry about getting a little on the binding, because it dries clear. Be sure to pay close attention to the edges. You want the Mod Podge to cover the entire album and go all the way to the edges. This is why you don't use a scrapbook adhesive for this. You can also apply the Mod Podge to the paper if you want. It really doesn't matter, but I prefer to apply it to the book, so I don't have to lift the paper when it's wet.
Then put your paper on the cover of the notebook. When you initially put it down, you will be able to slide the paper a little to get it just where you want it to be.
To get a strong hold and to remove any bubbles, roll a brayer over your paper. If you don't have a brayer, smooth out any bubbles by running your fingers on the paper, flattening the bubbles.
Repeat this process for the back of the notebook.

Once the adhesive is dry, trim the edges of the paper to remove any excess. Using a sanding block, sandpaper or an emery board, sand the edges of the paper.
This step is optional, but it will prevent the edges from tearing or fraying, remove sharp edges, give it a slightly distressed look, and makes the scrapbook paper appear to be part of the cover. If you want to ink the edges, you can do that as well. The sanding will help the ink adhere to the paper.
From here, you will begin to build your cover, just as you would a layout.
Here are some ideas:
- If you like the collage look, adhere several different papers to the cover using Mod Podge.
- If you want to add more paper to your cover, apply the Mod Podge to the back of paper and then add adhere it to your base paper.
- Before adding your embellishments, you may want to cover the entire front and back with a coat of Mod Podge. This will seal it. You can put the Mod Podge over flat, paper embellishments, but you obviously don't want to cover ribbon, flowers, etc. I do this if the notebook will be getting a lot of wear, but if I'm using it for a personal journal, I don't apply a cover of Mod Podge. I like the feel of the paper.
- Mod Podge comes in a couple of different varieties. For most things, I use the matte. I also comes in a glossy finish which I use if I want a shiny look. I also recently purchased some Sparkle Mod Podge, and I love it! For my journal, which I'll share later, I used the sparkle on a few paper embellishments that I added.
- When you have your paper just the way you want it, let everything dry. It will dry pretty quickly. Now you can start adding what ever you want.
- I love chunky, lumpy, 3D items on my layouts, but they don't work so well on journals. When you're finished, you want your journal to lie flat, so you can write in it!
- You can add flowers, ribbon, a photo, alpahbet letters, a frame, or just about anything you have in your stash.
- If your notebook has a metal binding, you can tie ribbons on the binding.
- You can also cover the inside of the covers with patterned paper!
- These same steps can be used to alter the cover of a mini album, or the cover of one of the plain American Crafts D-ring albums.

Most of all, have fun creating!
Here is Valerie's beautifully done finished notebook!!

Thanks for the tips Valerie!! I can't wait to get started on my own notebook now!!

Christmas Countdown Class

Trying to get back in the swing of things, here is a class for this week...I am currently getting ready for Christmas craft sales and I am constantly looking for new ideas for Christmas crafts. This week's project is a countdown calendar made from a small dollar store corkboard.

What you will need:

A corkboard

Rings

Hole Puncher/CropADile

Cardstock (about 4 sheets)

Patterned papers

Embellishments for decorating

Step 1: Cut a piece of cardstock the same size as the cork. If your cork is removable from the back (as mine was) remove it, adhere cardstock onto it, and replace. If it is not removable, you will need to make sure your cardstock is exactly the same size/shape before adhering. You CAN paint the cork instead, but I had some issues with it warping.

Step 2: Punch holes in the top of your cork near the middle.

Step 3: Cut 24 pieces of cardstock, all the same size. Mine are 4"x4" but this will vary depending on the size of your corkboard, and how far apart your holes are spaced.

Step 4: Punch holes in all of your cardstock pieces, making sure to line them up with the holes on your corkboard.

Step 5: Thread all of the cardstock pieces onto the rings, then insert the rings through the holes on the coarkboard and close.

It will look something like this...

Step 6: Decorate! I used Making Memories FaLaLa papers for mine with miscellaneous Christmas-y embellishments. Tie a ribbon through the hangers (if there are any) for easiest hanging and flipping of days.

Scalloped edges instructions, with photos:

1. Turn the paper that you want to scallop backwards/upside down. Use a circle template to trace on to the paper.

2. Carefully use the Basic Grey notch tool and press around the penciled circle. Be sure to stay on the line so that the scalloped circle comes out even.

Colorizing Photos Class

Don't you just love the look of those black and white photos with the POP of color in them! I always have and I just had to figure out how to do it myself!! So, here I am to show you!

This tutorial was written based on Paint Shop Prop 7 but should be convertible to any photo editing program that uses layers.

Step 1: Open a COLOR photo in your editing program
Photobucket

Step 2: Go to your "layers" menu and click on "duplicate" This will essentially paste a copy of the photo over top of the first, as a new layer.

Step 3: Make sure that your top layer is selected (you can do this just by clicking on it) and go to your "colors" menu. Choose "colorize" (NOT greyscale...this will turn the color pallette for both layers to greyscale and we want to still have the color underneath) Set the values in the colorize options box to zero
Photobucket

Now your top layer will be black and white, but your bottom layer will still be in color.

Step 4: Choose your "eraser" tool. If it is a small area yo want to be in color, then adjust your eraser size accordingly. Now, erase the portion of your photo that you want to be in color. As you erase, the color from the bottom layer will show through.
Photobucket

You will need to zoom in close on your photo to make sure you are getting in any little nooks and crannies (like between the fingers on this photo)

Step 5: When you are finished erasing, and are happy with the look of your photo, go back to your "layers" menu. Click on "merge" and then "merge all/flatten"
Photobucket

Here are some othe examples of ones I have done...

Make Your Own Lei Class

This class is brought to us by Maureen aka DolphinDesigns for the Luau Crop! The first part of the challenge is to follow the class and create a lei, then photograph yourself wearing it for one name slip into the Grand Prize drawing! If you scrap the photo you took of yourself this weekend, you will get a second name slip into the drawing!!

So, here's the class...

Supplies you'll need:
Sewing needle
Thread or fishing line (30-40 inches)
Flowers (consider using silk flowers. As some can be taken apart and the layerscan be used individually)

Step 1~Cut the straws into 1 inch (2.5cm) lenghts

Step 2~Create a basic flower design templateon paper. Cut the piece out and make paperflowers, using different colors. Or you can use silk flowers instead of paper.Poke holes in the middle of each flower.

Step 3~ Poke string through the hole of the flower. Then thread it through a straw. Repeatthis step til there is just enough to tie.

Step 4~Tie the ends together and cut off the remainder of the string.

Little trivia regarding the Lei...A flower Lei is known worldwide as a symbol of the aloha spirit.

Can't wait to see all of your beautiful Leis!!

Flip Flop Album Class

Here it is ladies...finally!! This class will count as a challenge for the Tropical Luau crop happening this weeked. If you complete and album you will get two name slips into the Grand Prize drawing AND I will draw one name from all the completed albums for a little RAK!

Materials Needed:
pair of Flip-flops
Cardstock
Scissors
Pencil
Adhesive
patterned papers and embellishments to decorate

Step 1: Prepare your flip flops. I didn't like the colors of mine so I took them apart and painted them

Step 2: Trace around your flip flops onto the cardstock and cut them out. You will need an even number of pages. (The photo is hard to see, but I cut 8...thought I ended up only using 6)
Step 3: Decorate your pages and covers BEFORE putting the album together! If you do it while it is put together already it will be very awkward! Your first page will be attached to the back of your front flip flop, so be sure to match up the correctly shaped piece, then alternate back and forth.
Step 4: Cut 1/2 inch wide strips of cardstock...the amount you will need will depend on the number of pages you have used, I used 2 strips for 6 pages.

Step 5: Assembling the album: Attach one end of one strip to the back of your fron flip flop, with the excess overhanging to the right (when looking at the back). Then attach your first page to the back of the front flip flop, on top of the strip, sealing it in between.

Step 6: Assembling the album: Now attach your pages to the strip and repeat step 5 with the back flip flop.

Now your album is complete!!

Can't wait to see what you ladies create!!

Paper Bag Card Class

This fun twist on the paperbag album is brought to us by our Guest Designer, Tammy!! I can't wait to make one of these, this is such a fun idea!!

Paper Bag Card

Okay, I know that somewhere out in cyber space someone has probably already done this, but I love making paper bag albums, and I thought, why not do a card??
For this you will need:

Paper bag
Cardstock
PP
Ribbon
Crop-a-Dile
Ruler
Paper Trimmer
Embellishments
Glue/adhesive
Sewing Machine (optional)

The first thing you need to do is take your bag and fold it in half. I like to have the bottom base as my front. You’ll see why at the end.

The next thing I do is measure in about a half an inch from the folded edge

Go ahead and use your sewing machine to stitch from top to bottom (You don’t necessarily have to sew this, but I think it makes it look neater and not so flimsy).

Once you have completed that, punch a hole in the top and bottom where you have created that seam. I went in about half an inch.

Next open the bag. I like to use cardstock as a base to build that sturdiness. Cut your cardstock to size and the put a little glue on it and place it on your bag. (I use the glue to hold it in place while Im sewing). Next ,I zig-zagged across the top and the bottom. I follow the same instructions for the right inside flap, except that I sew up the left side, and then I sew along the right edge, except that I’m going to leave at least 3 inches open in the middle.

Can you see where I’m going with this now?

I’m not a great seamstress, so I go ahead and embellish with patterned paper and other stuff to cover up my sewing. Of course if you like to sew, you could always make it more decorative and incorporate that into the card!

Now go ahead and embellish away both the front and inside however you like!

Don’t forget to pass a ribbon through those 2 holes in the seam, I think that touch just finishes it off so nice!!

I used a clip to close mine because I didn’t want anything falling out.

See, the perfect place to tuck in a gift card or money or a secret love note!!

Do-It-Yourself Clear Album

For our class this week, I am going to show you how to make your own clear album! I had seen so many super cool albums done with the acrylic albums and I really wanted to try them, but the price of buying one scared me away...especially since I had no idea what I would even do with one! A few months ago I took a class at a crop at Scrap City where we made acrylic panels and hinged them together. Then a few weeks after that my mom bought a poster frame from WalMart for a poster I had for Austin. As I was putting the poster in the frame I noticed that the "glass" of the poster was quite similar to the acrylic. So, I went and bought another frame ($10CAD for a 24"x36" frame) brought it home, dug out my utility knife and cut it down into 8x8 squares. I had a few mishaps with the blade sliding and leaving marks, and not getting a clean break when breaking them apart, but in the end I managed to get two 8x8 albums with 5 pages each. Now I am making wedding gift for a friend of mine and decided I would try this out again. So, here is how I did it...

Supplies:
Poster frame*
Marker
Ruler
Utility knife
Crop-A-Dial
Rings...or whatever else you might want to use to hold the book together
Paper and embellishments to decorate
* You can also go to a glass shop and get a product called Makrolon...or they may have another type of acrylic...they charge by the square foot and will cut it down to the sizes you want.

Instructions:
Step 1: Start out by finding a flat, firm surface to work on...something that you won't mind getting a couple cut marks on ;)

Step 2:Measure out your pages...for this album I went with 9x9, so I measured 9inches from the edge, then another 9inches from there down one side and across the top.

**If you DO NOT take off the protective covering (I had already been using this one as a frame, so the covering was off) you can draw your cutting lines right on it with a permanent marker, they will be gone when you remove the covering afterwards :) Since I didn't have the covering on mine I just drew little marks that I would be able to remove or hide later.

Step 3: Cut along your cutting lines, run over them a couple of times. I used a metal ruler to cut along so the lines were straight, you have to push very hard. Be careful not to slip! To make it easier to break the pages apart flip it over and cut on the lines again, once or twice, from the other side.
Step 4: Break apart your pages very carefully. I keep one hand putting pressure on the cut marks from one side while bending very slowly from the other side. They will bend at the cut and then you can pull them apart.
Step 5: *Optional* If you have a handheld electric sander you may want to sand down the edges to get rid of any jagged parts. You can use a file (like the BG file set) but it takes a long time, lol, I did one page and decided they were good enough as is!!

Step 6: On one of your pages, mark where you want your holes to be. (On mine I went two inches in from each corner, and then in the middle of those two for the third one) Use your crop-a-dial to punch the holes. To do the rest of your pages you can either mark your holes again on each page OR you can hold your original page on top of he next page and just punch through the holes again. (If I had a page with one edge that had a scratch on it, I put the holes in that edge since the scratches would be less noticable there)

Step 7: Line up all your pages on top of each other and attach them together in whatever way you want...I used 7Gypsies rings. Your album is now ready to be decorated!!

Here's one of the other albums I did...you may be waiting a while for photos of this one completed, lol!!
